Release Day (It’s FINALLY here!!)

I want to celebrate this day by eating chocolate with all of you!!

My kids often ask, “If you could have one special power, what would you want?” Of course, they mean the ability to fly (which could be handy when we’re running late for the school bus) or lasers shooting from my eyes (also handy for cooking dinner) or super speed (great for cleaning the house in the blink of an eye) but what I would really want, would be the ability to make baked goods appear out of thin air and then send them to anywhere in the world on a thought. I believe that power is the true path to world peace.

Anyway, to day is release day for Christmas Kisses: An Echo Ridge Anthology and I wanted to share a little known fact about the book. We slipped in some pretty awesome recipes. That’s right, each story has a recipe that goes with it!

In The Candy Counter Heiress, Andy has a thing for banana flavored chocolates (and kisses) so Lucy whipped up a recipe for Chocolate Banana Nut Bread.
Christmas Makeover introduces you to one of the hot spots in Echo Ridge where the pizza is to die for. Cami Checketts has included a recipe for Emma’s Homemade Bread that will have you going back for seconds.
Rachelle Christensen’s Hope for Christmas is a story with a whole lot of heart and her recipe for Carlos’s White Chicken Chili
w/Optional Slow-Cooker tips
has a whole lot of flavor!
Soda Fountain Christmas, by Connie Sokol, celebrates the fun of yesteryear as Kenworth’s Department Store works to regain the sense of community department stores were built upon. To celebrate days gone by, Connie included a recipe for Martha Jean’s Apple Cider Donuts.
Heather Tullis, author of One Winter Night, knows how to spice up a story and her recipe for Fay’s Gingerbread Cupcakes is just the thing to cap off your holiday parties.
BUT, you get so much more than wonderful recipes with Christmas Kisses. The stories are sure to capture your imagination–and your heart–and transport you to Echo Ridge where romance, Christmas music, and twinkling lights abound.

Make Your Diamonds Sparkle for the Holidays

Okay, we all love to wear a little bling on  daily basis. I mean, I’m a fool for a good pair of hoop earrings studded with costume jewels. In a pinch, I’ll settle for glossy lips if I have to. But during the holidays, there’s a whole other level of bling to present and it’s totally okay.

My darling friend, Rachelle Christensen is an expert at DIY techniques. I loved this easy way to keep your diamonds sparkling because I love my wedding ring and it gets pretty filthy. She shares this tip in her book, Diamond Rings Are Deadly Things, and she is one of the authors featured in Christmas Kisses: An Echo Ridge Anthology.

Keep Your Diamonds Sparkling

A little tip from Rachelle

I’ve been married to my sweetheart, Steve, for 17 years and this is the diamond ring he gave me all those years ago. It’s been through a lot of wear, had to be re-pronged and frequently is dirty since I have five kids and endless household chores.

I only get it cleaned when I go to the mall, and the shop we bought it from checks and cleans it, so if you look closely in the picture, you can see it isn’t sparkling today because I don’t go shopping much.

Here’s a great little solution that only takes five minutes to keep your diamond sparkling!

Soak your diamond ring in a warm solution of liquid dish detergent and water for five minutes.

Use a soft brush if necessary to remove dirt. Soft is the key—don’t use a brush with bristles that

are stiff enough to scratch the ring’s metal setting.

Swish the ring around in the solution and then place it in a colander (so you don’t lose it down the drain).

Rinse it thoroughly in warm water. Dry with a lint-free cloth.

Now look at that diamond ring sparkle! Hopefully you can tell a difference from the pictures. If not, try it, you’ll definitely smile when you notice the difference on your own ring!

Chelsea Jamison has been infatuated with Drew Stirling longer than she’s loved playing basketball, high-top sneakers, and the Knicks. She is not focused on Tayton Wells, the tall, dark, and genius marketing guru from downtown New York, hired to make it happen. He is as doubtful that her nostalgic connect-the-town ideas will succeed as she is about his numbers-first plan. However, it’s not just their different approaches that cause sparks to fly. Hope for Christmas by Rachelle J. Christensen Amazon bestselling & award-winning author

Anika Fletcher hates Christmas–its promises of good tidings and hope for the future are as tinseled as the ornaments on Kenworth’s Hope Tree. Despite her feelings, Anika wants to maintain her daughter’s faith in the magic of the season and gladly accepts a second job working with the handsome Carlos Rodriguez to restore Kenworth’s old fashioned soda fountain. Carlos is no stranger to hard times and slowly shares his life of light and joy with Anika as they work together. Just as her fragile soul begins to feel hope again, an ill-timed act of charity changes everything. Anika isn’t sure who she can trust or if hope is worth nurturing–especially at Christmas when it’s easy to enjoy a kiss and believe love can last longer than the season.

Enjoy the Season by Cami Checketts

‘Tis the season to enjoy time with loved ones, reach out a helping hand to those in need, and cuddle in front of the tree with hot cocoa and cookies. Christmas is a wonderful time of year filled with joyful moments, but I find myself becoming so crazy busy I can hardly fit in a workout and who wants to eat health when the neighbors are bringing over fudge. I’m definitely a believer in savoring that fudge but I also thought of a few ways that I keep my body feeling somewhat healthy throughout the season.

1- Only eat something if it is truly a Christmas treat. Just because they make Oreos with red and green filling does not mean they’re an exclusive Christmas treat, but Aunt Abbie’s peppermint dessert? That’s worth savoring.

2 – Turn on Christmas music and dance. My kids think Mom twirling to the Nutcracker is hilarious but they aren’t afraid to jump right in.

3 – Go ice-skating, sledding, snow-shoeing, or cross-country skiing. Try out a new sport, the variety is great for improving physical fitness and the challenge is wonderful for your mind. I personally love cross-country skiing, it’s a mix of running and skiing (two of my favorite sports) but it doesn’t take as much skill as skiing and I don’t feel the joint pounding that I get when I run.

4 – Go for a walk outside. When the temperature is below 50 you burn more calories – it’s worth it to freeze the tip of your nose but if it’s so cold your eyelashes crystallize you’d better take it to the treadmill.

5 – Bake your favorite treats, have a sample, then take them to all the neighbors. The visits will be almost as fun as the baked goods.

6 – Enjoy your family and forget about everything else. Play with your kids. Read Christmas stories and thrive on their childlike joy. Snuggle up with your sweetheart and burn some calories kissing in front of the tree.

7 – Focus on the Savior and following his example of love and service, the real reason we celebrate this blessed holiday, and the joy will continue throughout the new year.

Merry Christmas!

North for Christmas Blog Tour

North for Christmas blog tour GREEN

Have you ever known exactly what you wanted for Christmas? As a child, you may have written a letter to Santa, made a wish upon a star, or locked your dream away in your heart afraid that it might not come true if you so much as whispered it out loud. Even as adults, Christmas wishes carry a magic that can’t be explained.

ICovern North for Christmas, Ruby Jeavon certainly has her heart set on an engagement. It’s the first step in creating the family she’s always wanted. But things go slightly off course and instead of flying to Italy with her boyfriend, Ruby heads out of town to work as an elf in Nashville. Even though she’s far away from her dream, she’s about to discover the magic of a Nashville Christmas through the eyes of North Foxwell, her fellow elf and a Christmas expert. Even though North struggles with his own Christmas ghosts, Ruby manages to bring new light to his life. Can Ruby let go of her dream to find what her heart truly desires? Only time–at the North Pole–will tell.

You can pick up your copy of North for Christmas at your local book store, iTunes, Barns and Noble, or from Amazon.

Jeremiah Scott returns to Weatherton, Wyoming after a six-year absence, with plans to renew the family ranch he’d left after his father’s death. Hang Your Heart on Christmas
Heather Blanton

When a prisoner transfer goes awry in his hometown of Evergreen, Wyoming, and Dent’s good friend is killed, he is forced to serve as interim sheriff. But Dent should be out on the trail hunting down murderers, not scolding candy thieves and escorting the very pretty, but jittery, schoolteacher around. What is she so afraid of? Turns out, a lot of people in Evergreen are keeping secrets.

Mail Order Bride: Husband of the Bride
By Susette Williams
Widowed for years, Ma has been the matriarch of the family, facing the challenges of raising four boys into men. With the arrival of her first grandchild imminent, Ma finds herself face-to-face with the town doctor who has very differing views from hers.

Doc is opinionated, and believes it is time for Ma to look out for her own needs—and desires. He’s old enough to know you can’t live in the past; you need to move on to have a future. But can he convince a stubborn, determined woman he’s worth settling with? Will Ma be able to keep up with her four sons and their new brides and survive the holidays, or will her family grow even larger—in more ways than one?

A Mountain Man’s Redemption
Christi Corbett
Eighteen years ago, Philip Grant—overcome with regret for what he couldn’t foresee and memories of what he couldn’t prevent—abandoned all to live the solitary life of a fur trapper. Years spent roaming Montana Territory left his body weary and his confidence weak. Hopeless, he decides to turn in his last bundle of furs and await the inevitable in a cabin. Alone.
Everything changes when he discovers a battered woman and her infant son, on the run from their ruthless abuser. Seventy miles of mountains and windswept flatlands stand between them and safety. Can Philip trust in his newfound faith to lead the way?

North for Christmas and Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Fall is my all-time favorite season. Oh, I love summer barbeques and skiing in Park City is awesome in the winter; but, fall is full of mischief, magic, spices and pumpkins. With that in mind, I developed this recipe for Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes. Hold on to your capes, brooms, and costume makeup because they will take you for a ride and you’ll be begging to go again.

Keep in mind, that right after the costumes and the turkey get put away, Christmas is here. Not only will the Echo Ridge Anthology be available; I also have a Christmas romance called North for Christmas that will be available through my publisher and online mid-October. But, if you’d like to get a jump on things, it’s available for preorder in print or ebook form. I loved every minute of creating this story because it was one I had wanted to write for quite some time. I hope you love Ruby and North and the whole Foxwell clan as much as I do.

Back Cover–Cover

“I had Sheri gather the information on a flight to Italy, the hotel, and ski passes. I’m sorry, dear. It costs too much. I have other obligations this time of year.”

Ruby’s heart sank.

So much for getting engaged at the bottom of the Alps.

Ruby knows her CEO mother really could afford to send her to Europe for Christmas. But instead Ruby’s stuck in Tennessee working as a Christmas elf so she can pay for the trip that would finally get her the family she’s always wanted. Wrangling whiny kids at the mall certainly isn’t the holiday she had in mind. But things turn around when North—a lawyer-turned-elf, takes it upon himself to share a real family Christmas with Ruby. Will Ruby buy her plane ticket to Italy or will she decide that family isn’t something you achieve it’s something you create. This charming holiday romance is perfect for the book lovers on your list! Sweet and full of surprises, it’ll bring a little Christmas cheer to your bookshelves all year long!

Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Ingredients
1 (16 ounce) can pumpkin
1 2/3 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
2/3 cups canola oil
4 eggs
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon all spice
a pinch of cloves
1 1/2 cups milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup milk (plus 2-5 tablespoons as needed)
Cream Cheese Frosting

Directions
Place muffin cups in muffin tin and set aside.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl, stir together the pumpkin, sugar, oil, vanilla and eggs. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, all spice, and cloves. Divide evenly among 30 cupcake cups and bake for 14-17 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Once cupcakes have cooled, place the chocolate chips, butter, and milk in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat and stir until melted. Dip the top of each cupcake in the chocolate, twisting as you lift out to avoid drips. Allow chocolate to set for 10-15 minutes before frosting with cream cheese frosting and sprinkling with a dash of cinnamon. If desired, you can use a decorator’s piping bag and tip to create mounds of frosting on top.

Get back to basics at back-to-school time by Connie Sokol

Back to school–it’s that magical time of year (for children or for parents?) When you make a few quick changes to routine, purpose and appreciation, the summer-to-fall transition can be smoother and happier.

De-stress one system

Rather than overhaul your home before school starts (was that even a goal?) organize fall one system at a time. Consider the one that bothers you most — kids’ lunches, entry way coming and going, school papers — and tackle that one first. For example, school papers can be contained in folders, magazine holders, trays, clipboards, etc.

Use the system that works best for you. I’ve used all of them and found a fit combining three: kids put to-do homework in a folder, graded homework in a tray and long-term project information in their clipboard. This may seem complex, but for whatever reason it works!

Find your focus

If you have children heading back to school, they’re going to experience mental and emotional growth (we hope). Happily, you get to, too. Consider what helps you experience “joyful contribution,” meaning, something small or big that helps you feel creative, fulfilled or joyful.

For example, on a small level of this a few years ago, my daughters and I loved tmake flower cookies: chocolate chip cookie dough pressed in a flower mold, then baked with a lollipop stick and tied with a bow. We would take these to friends and neighbors, and it absolutely brought us joy (and licking the bowl was joyful too …).

As you decide on something joyful, perhaps a medium-level adventure would include going back to school too, like a friend of mine. She is a mom doing an online program so that with little children at home, it’s more doable for her schedule. In this way, she can continue progressing toward her ultimate educational goal of receiving a college degree.

If it resonates, something on a larger scale might be a purposeful project. A few years ago, a friend of mine noticed that in the neighborhood the kids played on a solitary large rock. While fine, she wanted them to have something more interesting and that allowed more children to gather and play. She partnered with another friend, involved the community, garnered donations, and after several months had created a beautiful and functional play area. Later she shared that on a city celebration day, she looked over at the children all playing happily on the play area and felt a surge of joy.

Notch up marital appreciation

In his excellent book “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work,” Dr. John Gottman shares a simple but powerful appreciation exercise. Using a list of character traits (he has a list of about 70, but you can create your own) have each spouse choose three positive traits of the other spouse. Jot down experiences where those traits were observed. Each spouse then takes a turn sharing a trait of the other spouse and sharing the related experience. This takes perhaps five to 10 minutes tops, but it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

If you like, expand that exercise to your family. We did this a few nights ago, with each child drawing a sibling’s name and then sharing three great qualities about that sibling, and one related experience. Despite the teenage boys’ obvious I’d-rather-get-my-wisdom-teeth-pulled response, they actually shared positive comments to the other person’s just as obvious delight.

Enjoy this back-to-school time by “attending” to three different but joy-giving areas.

Slow Cooked Molasses Roast

Serves 6

The first time I made this roast, I ended up eating a good portion while standing over the slow cooker with a fork. Do not be afraid of the molasses, it creates a gorgeous color and takes the meat to a deep flavor that will have your family hovering around the kitchen in anticipation. I serve it alone or on toasted bread.

Ingredients

1 (3-4 pound) pork roast

½ cup molasses

½ cup pickle juice

1 tablespoon Grey Poupon

1 tablespoon onion powder

1 tablespoon cumin

1 tablespoon cilantro

1 teaspoon red pepper

Directions

Place the roast in a slow cooker.

In a small mixing bowl, combine the molasses, pickle juice, grey poupon, onion powder, cumin, cilantro, and red pepper. Pour over the meat and turn the meat several times to coat well. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until the roast is cooked through.

New Christmas Anthology and Giveaway

My husband teases me about going to writers’ conferences because I get so excited. I love the classes, the instructors, and the food is usually top-notch. What I’ve also noticed is that I always come away from a conference with new friends. Last summer’s conference was no exception. Over dinner, I sat between Rachelle Christensen and Connie Sokol. We got to discussing story ideas and thought that a Christmas romance anthology based around a department store could be a lot of fun to write. And let me tell you, it was!  Here’s a quick sneak peek at the stories. At the bottom of the page, you’ll find a rafflecopter giveaway. Each author has donated 1-2 books. Personally, I selected The Healthy Family Slow Cooker Cookbook (published under Christina Dymock) because, when you cook with a slow cooker, you have more time for reading.

Christmas Makeover by Cami Checketts Amazon bestselling author

Chelsea Jamison has been infatuated with Drew Stirling longer than she’s loved playing basketball, high-top sneakers, and the Knicks. Unfortunately, all Drew sees is the kid who kicked his trash in the high school free throw contest and not the girl whose heart breaks into a fast dribble when he’s near.

Drew makes an unexpected visit home to Echo Ridge and their friendship picks up where they left off as they scheme to make a teenaged boy’s Christmas dreams come true. When Chelsea realizes she’s fallen for her best friend, she wonders if there is any hope of a relationship with Drew or if she’s stuck in buddy-status for life.

But will the tough decisions they face drive them back to their separate worlds, or will they lead to the beginning of love?

It’s Out!!

Hello Friends,

Well, I’ve been a bit late in posting this so I hope you’ll forgive me.

The Professional Bride: Billionaire Marriage Brokers Book Three is now available!

Amber Book 3 Front Cover

About the book:

Amber Appleby is not the blushing bride. She makes a career out of being a wife—a business wife that is. After signing divorce papers with her third husband, Amber’s looking forward to a few months in a tropical location when Pamela, owner of a matchmaking service for the ultra wealthy, calls her into the office to ask a favor. Pamela explains that her life-long friend has passed away leaving a world-class ski resort and extensive financial holdings to his grandson, Rym, with the stipulation that he marry a BMB bride to coach him through his first year as a billionaire. Amber’s up for the assignment but Rym turns out to be a maverick—and a gorgeous one at that. Amber’s skills as a life coach are tested at every turn right along with her heart. Faced with a law suit that could wipe out the resort Rym’s grandpa built from scratch, Amber has to decide if she’ll protect her marriage or the thing Rym loves most. Marriage was much simpler when love wasn’t involved.

Back-stage information about writing The Professional Bride.

I must tell you that research for this book was both fun and completely painful. I took ski lessons. I know, living in Utah I should have been born with skis on. However, I didn’t start skiing until I was in my 30s so I had the full Amber experience. My children started at the same time I did and while they are skiing black diamonds (well, two of them are) I am still trying to feel comfortable on any part of the mountain. I fell. I fell a lot those first days out. And, when I was falling, I would dig my right elbow into the ground to slow down. That’s not a great idea. If you’re ever in Park City, go ahead and slide down the hill as far as you can. It cuts down on your time spent in a wedge and can save your leg muscles. .

Speaking of leg muscles, there’s another bit of the story that’s true–if your ski boots are too large your feet will slide around in them and you’ll end up gripping with your toes. That doesn’t sound so bad until you’ve sat down for a while and your calves seize up. Oh the pain. I’m a pretty active person. I run. I bike. I wakeboard. I hike. I do waterslides and roller coasters. But, never in all my days have I been as muscle sore as I was after skiing in boots that were too big.

I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining. (Maybe I was the morning I couldn’t walk but not anymore.) I simply wanted to share some of the hard-learned lessons from the ski lift with you. You know, in case you ever find yourself at the top of a hill, strapped into a pair of skis, and quaking. 🙂 If you do, remember to take the hill one turn at a time–kind of like life–and falling in snow is a lot different than falling off a bike.

I hope you enjoy reading The Professional Bride as much as I enjoyed the process of writing it.
